This Throwback Thursday, the bell rings for one of our own.
Before the world crowned him the Prince of Soul, Marvin Gaye was a Washington, DC child, born April 2, 1939. The Nation’s Capital raised him. Motown polished him. The whole planet claimed him.
Watch him take “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” to Montreux, Switzerland in 1980. A DC son. A world stage. The same fire.
“Grapevine” became a No. 1 hit in 1968. Three years later, What’s Going On asked America questions it still hasn’t answered. Marvin proved a love song and a protest song can come from the same heart.
And here’s what I want every Highness in Ward 7 to know: Marvin Gaye Park runs right through our community. His name lives on our land. His legacy is our inheritance.
The past is Marvin. The present is us. The future is the child in Benning Heights who hears “Grapevine” today and picks up a horn tomorrow.
