#TBTMusic: Nat King Cole — The Velvet Voice That Changed American Music
Great Rising Your Highness, I hope you are exceedingly well. Children of the sun I invite you all to ring Mother Earth’s Great Bell. #TBTMusic edition features one of my favorite crooners… Before the playlists, before streaming, before “crossover” became industry language, Nat King Cole was moving through American music with a voice so smooth it practically rewrote the atmosphere.
Born Nathaniel Adams Coles in 1919, Cole first emerged as a brilliant jazz pianist and bandleader with the King Cole Trio. But once audiences heard that unmistakable baritone, history shifted.
Songs like “Unforgettable,” “Mona Lisa,” “L-O-V-E,” and “Nature Boy” turned Cole into one of the defining voices of the 20th century.
What makes his story especially powerful is what that elegance required.
Cole became an international star while performing in an America still rigidly segregated. In 1956, he became the first Black man to host a nationally televised variety program, The Nat King Cole Show. His brilliance opened doors that the industry and the country were still trying to keep shut.
And he did it without surrendering the sophistication, warmth, jazz foundation, or unmistakable Blackness underneath the music.
That is crooning at its highest level: not simply singing softly, but making intimacy powerful.
Today, put on Nat King Cole with the lights low. Listen past the nostalgia. Hear the phrasing. Hear the restraint. Hear the command.
The frequency is still alive.
