#WCWMusic: Ari Lennox — Mobbin’ in DC, Shining Worldwide
Lightbringers…
Great Rising Your Highness, I hope you are exceedingly well. Children of the sun I invite you all ring Mother Earth’s Great Bell.
This Wednesday the bell rings right here at home. When a daughter of the District carries her sound from Chocolate City to stages around the world, and still opens her newest album with a love letter to DC, we stand up and say her name. Today’s #WCWMusic crown goes to the one and only Ari Lennox.
A Daughter of the District
Born Courtney Shanade Salter in Washington, DC on March 26, 1991, Ari Lennox started putting her music on the internet back in 2009 and built her lane the hard way, one listener at a time. That grind made her the first woman signed to J. Cole’s Dreamville Records, where she gave us Shea Butter Baby (2019) and age/sex/location (2022).
In 2025 she parted ways with Dreamville and stepped into a new chapter on her own terms. That chapter has a name: Vacancy.
Before you read another word, press play. Stream Vacancy on Apple Music, pick up your vinyl straight from her own shop at store.arilennox.com, and hear Ari tell her story in her own words in “Finding Your Sound” on TIDAL Magazine.
Why Her Voice Matters Right Now
Vacancy landed January 23, 2026 on Interscope: 15 tracks, about 51 minutes, recorded over three years across Atlanta, Los Angeles and Miami. Ari co-wrote every single song. That is ownership of the pen, and ownership of the pen is power.
And look how she opens it: “Mobbin in DC,” a soulful salute to the hometown, blending R&B with a dancehall bounce. From there she reaches across the diaspora, bringing Jamaican legend Buju Banton onto “Company.” DC to Kingston on one record. That is the frequency we live for.
As a saxophonist, I have to tip my hat to the horn credits too: Kosine blows saxophone on the title track “Vacancy” and on “Wake Up.” Brass in the booth, soul on the mic. Yes indeed.
She didn’t stop at the release. Ari took Vacancy on a 31-city North American tour this spring, headlined London’s Jazz Cafe Festival in Burgess Park on August 2 (her only UK date of the year), and on July 31 dropped “Hookah Baby,” the lead single for the deluxe edition, Vacancy: The Late Checkout.
Here is the lesson for every artist in the DMV and beyond: when a door closes, you don’t wait in the hallway. You write your own record, put your city first, call your people from across the diaspora, and go take the world. Ari Lennox is living proof.
